Mahjong rules
Like many other traditional games, Mahjong has a variety of forms, making it a little difficult for those who want to find a decisive rule. The first rules shown here are based on the simplest, probably the most skillful formal Chinese games. There are also additional rules for British games. This version is a bit different from a typical Chinese game, only one butterfly is recognized in one hand, and there are few "special hands" in Chinese games. Some people may find British games more interesting than Chinese games, but Chinese games are more elegant and traditional. Both games are very different from typical play styles in the United States, and in China, besides the first set, larg e-scale and complex "special hands" are devised, and there are multiple players. You can't get a mahjong with a suit. In addition, since only the people who hit the mahjong can get rewards, it is basically strategic than a Japanese style that competes for completing first. There is also a version of Mahjong for three people to become a triangle.
Basic equipment
The set of mahjong tiles is usually composed of 144 tiles with about 30 x 20 x 15mm. Traditionally, they are made from bones and ivory, but modern sets are usually plastic. Composition of tile
36 circular tiles are 4 sets of nine tiles with 1 to 9 numbers. Each picture has an appropriate number of circles.
- 36 character tiles are 4 sets of 9 pairs with 1 to 9 numbers. Each picture depicts Chinese symbols that represent numbers.
- 4 sets of nine tiles with 36 bamboo tiles (bamboo tiles) 1-9. Except for "bamboo one", where sparrows and rice birds are drawn, and bamboo is often not drawn, each picture has an appropriate number of bamboo. Bamboo 1, 5, 7, and 9 are represented by both red and green bamboo pictures. Other bamboo tiles are represented by green bamboo only.
- 16 wind tile s-4 pieces of 4 winds each.
12 dragon tiles-4 red dragons are bright red letters, four green dragons are bright green letters, and four white dragons are traditionally represented by completely blank tiles. I am. However, some sets show a white dragon in the uppercase "P", which stands for "PAI", which means white or pure.
- 4 Flower tiles - The four flowers are numbered 1-4 and are optional. The depictions of the flowers vary widely from set to set, but traditionally the most common are plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo.
- Season tiles - The four seasons are numbered 1-4 and are optional. The depictions of the seasons vary widely from set to set, and the seasons are often unknown to those who cannot read Chinese.
The circles, characters, and bamboos are called "suits." The tiles 2-8 are called "small tiles." The remaining tiles 1 and 9 are called "large tiles." The wind and dragon tiles are called character tiles. In addition to the tiles, two dice are required. On traditional Chinese dice, 1 and 4 are red, and the remaining numbers are black.
Optional equipment
In practice, tiles and dice are all that is needed to play the game, and these rules are written assuming no other equipment. However, other tools often come with the set. The following may be used at the player's discretion, if available:
- Sets often contain spare empty tiles.
- Several joker tiles are also commonly included. The joker tile is a Chinese horse tile used in a game called goulash.
Four racks are a useful accessory to hold each player's tiles.
- More expensive sets contain four special counters representing the four winds. These are used to determine who sits where, instead of the standard four wind tiles, and are then placed in a special box called the ton box with the top tile representing the prevailing wind for each round.
- Finally, most sets come with some tally sticks that are used for scoring. Scores can of course be recorded in any medium; money, paper and pencil are also an option for the more gambling-minded.
- There are many types of scoring sticks. It doesn't really matter what value is assigned to each stick, as long as it is agreed upon beforehand and each player starts with the same number of sticks. In Japanese and American games, higher values should be assigned, but for the following Chinese and British games, typical values assigned at the beginning of the game are:
4 red dots and 3 green dots - 500 points - 1 stick per player
5 red dots - 100 points - 2 sticks per player
1 red dot - 10 points - 9 sticks
Black 8 points-2 points-10
- Mahjong-Chinese version
- Seat order
- Place four wind tiles one by one, shuffle and take one player one by one. Note that the player is not a standard compass position in n-w - s-E. In the clockwise order, he sits himself in accordance with this drawing. The east is an excellent wind, and it is an important position because this player starts and pays double score and double pay. In the subsequent rounds, the position changes in either of the following two:
- If the eastern wind disappears in the previous round, the ranking remains the same, and the eastern wind players remain the same in the next round.
- If the other wind disappears in the previous round, the position of the wind rotates counterclockwise, and the player who was in the south wind in the previous round turns the eastern wind.
- Mahjong's complete session may take hours to complete, but after each player becomes eastern wind, the south wind is dominant. When the south wind is over, it becomes a west wind, and finally the north wind. The session ends when each player plays the north wind. Of course, there is no need to complete the session, and it is good to play the number of rounded rounds or achieve the target score.
- Wall construction
- Flowers and seasons are not usually used in Chinese games, so they are not used in this rule. A ritual called a sparrow's "sparrow", all tiles are thoroughly shuffled in the south and north. At the end of that, each player takes 34 tiles and placed on a 2-tile and 1 7-tiled wall. The tiles have long sides and face down. Place each wall from left to right in front of each player. Then, push the four walls to form a square that symbolizes the Great Wall. In order to prevent dragons and evil spirits from entering, it is important to treat the walls without gaps.
- Break the wall
- Next, the east decides who will throw a dice and will break the wall. East counts players counterclockwise from the east according to the number thrown. The player sitting at the end of the count throws the dice again and puts both together, and counts his wall from right to left. At the end of the count, the player deletes the tile pair at that time, and the walls performed by placing the front tile and the top tiles on the upper tiles at the counterclockwise and further counterclockwise. It is a place to break. These two tiles are called "loose tiles". So, for example, if the east throws 11, the west will be the selected player. If the west throws the dice again and obtains 8, the total thrown is counted along all 17 pairs of the west wall tiles, and then ends with the second pair of the southern wall tiles. In that case, it will be 19. In the west, remove these two tiles and place the upper tiles on the first (right end) pair of the south wall tiles. The lower tile is placed on the 16th tile of the west wall.
Tiles
Starting after a break (that is, continuing in a clockwise direction around the wall), the four tiles are in order to each player in order from the east and counterclockwise until each player has 12 tiles. It is distributed. Next, following the same direction around the wall, the first and third tiles of the first line are distributed east, and the first tiles in the south are west and north to the next tiles. The next tiles after the top line. That completes the transaction. The east ends with 14 tiles, and the other players have 13 tiles.
- the purpose
- Players generally try to collect tiles. The following three basic sets:
- A pun g-set of 3 same tiles, for example, 3 × red dragon, 3 × Ninomaru
- For example, bamboo and 4 x north wind 4 x eight.
- Butterfl y-execute three tiles in the same suit. It is the only useful, because the player can call mahjong, so that Chow does not score.
- The main purpose of the game is to go out when the player calls "Mahjong" and collects such tiles. To do this, players need to achieve one of the following:
- Pair, 4 pons, kongs or chows
- Special hand
- However, the overall purpose of the game is to accumulate a larger score than your opponent, and you need to remember that it is possible to do this in a series of rounds without being called mahjong.
- Way of playing
The first turn is performed by the east of throwing one tile by placing it on the table inside the remaining inside the wall. In the following turns, the player takes tiles, plays an optional combination of tiles, and discards the tiles. However, when the turn of which player takes the turn, the tiles are taken and different.
- After discarding each, any player who has two or three tiles matches the discarded tiles can take the next turn by calling Mahjong, Pon or Kong. Such a player has disposal, has a result pon or converter on the table in front of him, or in the case of mahjong, ends the game like this, ends the game like this. I will declare.
- If the player does not call Mahjong, Pon or Kong, the player takes the next turn to the right of the discarded player. If he has two tiles that can match the butterfly to form a butterfly, this player can call the butterfly (then the player has discarded and regenerates the resulting butterfly. You need to do it). Otherwise, this player simply takes the tiles from the open end of the wall. It is possible, and if you wish, he can declare PUNG, Kong or Chow by putting a combination in front of him.
- The player always places the turn inside the table inside the table and discards one tile.
Each time the Kong is declared, the player has to place all the tiles that form the kong on the table and immediately take tiles from the wall.
- The declared PUNG can be converted to Kong, but it uses tiles from the only wall. Only if the other three tiles are (hidden), Hong Kong can be used with discarded tiles.
- Unless they are picked up on the next turn, the discarded tiles are dead tiles and do not take more parts in the game.
- Finish < Span> The first turn is performed by the east of throwing one tile by placing it on a table inside the remaining inner wall.
- The first turn is done by the east of throwing one tile by placing it on the remaining table inside the wall. In the following turns, the player takes tiles, plays an optional combination of tiles, and discards the tiles. However, when the turn of which player takes the turn, the tiles are taken and different.

Unless they are picked up on the next turn, the discarded tiles are dead tiles and do not take more parts in the game.
Finishing
- If all the tiles on the wall are drawn, the game will be drawn and will not score. The tiles are shuffled again, and the game is restarted on the same player as the eastern wind. Once the player reaches another tile, the player declares "1 for Mahjong". It warns other players to be more cautious in their abandoned bills, and the player in question is said to be "call" or "fishing". Players who make a completed mahjong and tile from the wall declare mahjong and place all tiles. Any player who can form a mahjong hand that has just been discarded can call mahjong and get out of the tiled tiles. It is possible that a player can call mahjong with a discarded tile, and that another discarded tile can call pons or kong. In this case, a player with a mahjong is given priority. In addition, it may be possible for multiple players to make mahjong with discarded tiles. In this case, the closest player to the right of the discarded player wins the dispute and takes a tile to go to Mahjong. Players cannot declare Hong Kong and make mahjongs because they must always be taken when declaring Hong Kong. Players cannot declare mahjong and discard tiles. If the player takes a tile from the wall and the tiles can be used to go out, this player is played in a case that has already exposed to Hong Kong to form Hong Kong. You can "take Hong Kong" to go to Mahjong. Players are simply T
- Special hand
A special hand is an alternative target set of tiles that players can go to mahjong. Original Chinese games are allowed only for several special hands, but some western derivatives include more in controversy. The following is a list of special hands including its name, explanation, and award.

Tiles
Extracting the moon from the sea floo r-the moon is one of the circles. This is done by the player who discovered that it is the moon that can be limited to Mahjong = the player when drawing the last tile from the wall.
- score
- The limit is usually applied because the score may be ridiculously large. In tournaments, it has a lot of 1000 points, but in the United Kingdom, 2000 points are generally available. The scoring is complicated. If you do a mahjong with a special hand, or if you call it with a special hand with a mahjong, the score of the special hand is applied. If not, the score of each hand is calculated, the bonus points are added, and if it is appropriate, the dubling is performed. The score of each hand is calculated as shown in the following two table:
