The sequel maintained hig h-quality look and sound like anime, without improving the popular points in the previous work. Though the ghosts themselves are good, the game has an eerie atmosphere. The phone rings in the reception area, and you receive a message from the other side when you enter. The lights flicker, and orbs of light zoom through the halls. You're constantly aware that something is watching in the dark.
There are nods to different eras, from a World War II poster in the bathroom to high-tech ghost hunter gadgets left behind by more recent victims. Each room reflects the personality of its last occupant, and the events surrounding their disappearance are glimpsed through the many diaries and letters scattered throughout. The sound is excellent, from the creaking of stairs to the sporadic whispers of the surroundings, and the many puzzles fit the story well. Though a bit rough around the edges and obviously made on a low budget, the craftsmanship that went into this self-proclaimed "labor of love" is clear. Soon after receiving enthusiastic support, it was picked up by a publisher and subtitled The Journal. The series would go on to spawn a number of indie horrors, as well as two sequels by Volks. The moody and disturbing soundtrack adds to this tension beautifully, heightening the sense that every corner may hide an unspeakable horror from the Cthulhu mythos, constantly fraying your nerves. The horror isn't merely hinted at, though; something ancient lurks beneath the town, waiting to be awakened once again. Some sequences, especially towards the end of the game, are definitely not for the faint of heart and will send shivers down your spine. If you're looking for a nail-biting, jump-off-the-wall adventure, Shadow of the Comet is still a great choice to play today. The beautiful, serene, hand-drawn world remains at the forefront of the experience, and when combined with top-notch writing and sound, it creates a memorable, melancholic atmosphere that few games can match. What makes the game different is that you'll jump off windy train tracks and trek across the tundra, encounter a friendly pilot, have a harrowing encounter with a bear, and pass a couple of ivory poachers trying to claim Siberia and its mammoths for themselves. Unless Kate can find a way to heal him and deliver him safely to Dreamland, her sickly companion may miss his only goal in life.

And did we mention it's half free? Like its predecessor, Samorost 2 offers a stunning world that blends photorealistic natural imagery with hand-drawn animation. Despite the journey through completely foreign terrain - forests, sewers, underground networks, alien homes - it feels strangely familiar. The orchestral and sometimes jazzy score adds to this strange atmosphere. Whereas most games treat combinations as simple exercises in "use X with Y," here each structure is an actual recipe. When you connect two compatible items, a formula appears that tells you how many items you need to succeed, but it doesn't actually tell you what those items are. It's an inventory puzzler's dream, and it's a lot of fun tinkering with dozens of ingredients until you get it right. You can nurse the adorable monkey back to health, and he'll even function as an inventory item himself.
