Drill, perhaps, drilling, drilling

Good morning. I have Elon Mask in my mind, not for reasons that you may doubt.

It is because of his company, which is never tired, which is currently suffering from a problem in Las Vegas. (Read more below from Jessica Matthews from Fortune).

Just a few years ago, Mask promised to reduce traffic congestion in Los Angeles, which is famous for its crowding. Today, it has moved to Texas and left a literal tunnel of spilled promises.

I am still stuck, well, as you know.

Note: We published a few days ago that it indicates that Google does not pay for the news in Canada. The company has concluded an agreement with the federal government almost a year ago. Thanks to the reader, “Benoes” with the Eagle Eagle for this new s-Andrew Nuska

This has been a big year for AI as a scientific tool, and there's bound to be more to come.

Foxconn teams up with Nvidia to develop AI-powered supercomputer

Foxconn is famous for assembling Apple's iPhones, but soon it may be known for its own technological marvel: a massive AI supercomputer built in partnership with Nvidia that will be Taiwan's fastest.

Announced on Tuesday, the Hon Hai Kaohsiung Supercomputing Center will feature more than 4, 600 new ultra-rare Nvidia Blackwell GPUs and thousands of CPUs, delivering a promised 90 exaflops of AI performance (a feat that Foxconn claims will surpass anything else in Taiwan).

Once the beast is operational (the first phase is expected to be completed by mid-2025, with full rollout in 2026), Foxconn will focus on AI-powered cancer research, the development of new LLMs, and smart city innovation.

Foxconn and Nvidia are also collaborating on a project in Mexico. The two companies announced that Foxconn will build the world's largest factory for Nvidia's GB200 chips in Guadalajara. Sharon Goldman

TikTok's hits continue

TikTok is facing a new wave of lawsuits from attorneys general in 13 states, including New York, California and Washington, D. C.

The lawsuits accuse the popular social media video app of violating consumer protection laws by "intentionally" targeting young users and connecting them to a platform that is harmful to their health. (Meta was sued by four times as many state attorneys general nearly a year ago, and the lawsuit is still pending.) The lawsuits seek product changes and fines.

As of last year, TikTok said it had 150 million users in the United States, most of whom are under the age of 35, according to a survey. It's not clear exactly how many of those users are under 18, but a few years ago, a third of TikTok's user base was reportedly under 14. TikTok's CEO said last year that the platform's average user is "well beyond college students."

Either way, the lawsuit adds to the mountain of legal issues facing TikTok, which is owned by China's ByteDance. The platform is currently facing legal challenges from the Department of Justice and is fighting a presidential order in the Supreme Court that would ban ByteDance from selling in the US.

Elon Musk infiltrates the tunnel

Violations have been occurring in the underground transportation system built and operated by Elon Musk's company, The Boring Company, beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Skateboarders have entered the tunnel and been forced to escape. Pedestrians have walked while taking photos. And cars have accidentally entered the transit system's premises, which are closed off behind Teslas used to transport passengers underground.

According to documents obtained by Fortune through a Freedom of Information Act request, there have been at least 67 violations since 2022. And 22 vehicles have followed Teslas into stations and tunnels since early last year.

Musk's first working tunnel system, with funky lighting in pink, blue and green, may not be the high-speed Hyperloop he enthused about when the Las Vegas project began. But it still manages to attract people's attention. People who aren't supposed to go into the tunnel end up going in anyway.

Investors say Roblox has discarded user data

Short-selling investment firm Hindenburg Research has accused Roblox of inflating key metrics.

In a new report revealing its short position in Roblox, Hindenburg estimates that the US game developer inflated the number of users of its eponymous gaming platform by between 25% and 42% by being less than transparent about the number of alternative accounts and robots that contribute to daily active users (DAUs).

Roblox measures this distinction through a process called "dealing," a former employee reportedly told Hindenburg. Roblox also claims to have increased engagement time by about 100%.

Roblox, which turned 20 this year, has touted its user growth in recent years, setting a lofty goal of 1 billion users. The Nasdaq-listed company has told investors it isn't profitable and may not be for some time. (In its most recent quarter, Roblox posted revenue of $893 million and a loss of $206 million.)

Hindenburg also called Roblox a "horrible hellscape" for child safety, pointing out how a Bloomberg Businessweek investigation published in July detailed how leaders had failed to curb child abuse on the platform.

Roblox told The Wall Street Journal that the Hindenburg report was misleading and driven by an agenda. Its shares, at about $40 a share, have fallen 15% in the past two weeks.
