3 Things to Consider When Moving Machinery

Relocating machinery can be a costly and delicate undertaking. There are dozens of reasons why a facility might choose to relocate machinery, whether that be to improve workflow, accommodate new machinery, or improve floor safety.

Relocating machinery isn't just about moving within a company. In many cases, especially in industries where buying and selling used machinery is common, "moving" can mean moving equipment to an entirely different location.

Are you considering relocating in the future? If so, consider the following:

1. Use an installer to disassemble and reassemble machinery.

Machines are often very sensitive to factors like moisture, shaking, and dust. With dozens or even hundreds of moving parts, disassembling (even partially) can lead to lost parts, which can be time-consuming and expensive.

Working with a qualified, professional machinery installer, preferably the same installer that installed the machine in the first place, can help ensure objectivity. It's also a good idea to have the installer stay on after the move to thoroughly test the machine, especially if it needs to be calibrated.

2. Off-site moves require special care

You might be moving an entire factory across the country, or maybe selling a key part or two to an overseas manufacturer. Moving machinery off-site requires resources that are beyond the reach of most manufacturers. Hiring a rigger is the most cost-effective way to do it.

In some situations, you may need to store your machinery in a warehouse or shipping container for a period of time, so it's important to choose a moving company that offers competitive storage rates and a climate-controlled, secure storage location.

In most cases, it is the seller of the machine's duty to deliver the machine safely to the buyer, so taking special care during that time can help you close the deal in your favor.

3. Choose an installer who knows the entire production line

If possible, hire an installer who has extensive experience installing entire product lines in your industry. Such an expert can easily spot misalignments and inefficiencies and can help you choose a better layout for your new or existing machinery than you could see on your own.

In most cases, an installer with industry experience can easily handle the start-up and commissioning after installation. During unpredictable moves, budget overruns are common, so it is always best to work with an installer who charges a turnkey rate, not an hourly or piece rate.
