No one knows how many avalanches occur. Natural avalanches are never witnessed. Avalanches involving people are rarely reported unless someone is killed or injured.

But avalanches happen regularly at Creek Tunnel. Most slopes are 40 to 45 degrees, making it the perfect avalanche slope. It's flat enough to create deep snowbanks, but steep enough that the snow can slide long distances if it needs to. The long lift drop means the snow is fluffy at the top and soft at the bottom. Temperatures, winds and precipitation change rapidly, and sunlight can change the crystalline bonds deep in the snow. And because Creek Tunnel is outside the ski area, it's not patrolled or specially assessed for hazards.

In March 2011, a University of Washington student was caught in an avalanche at Tunnel Creek. He was carried to a tree stand and found uninjured by friends a few minutes later, but was pronounced dead. About an hour later, a second avalanche was triggered by the arrival of ski patrol, partially burying three other people.

Many experienced locals look at Creek Tunnel with a mixture of awe and fear.

"I've been a Creek Tunnel badass," snowboarder Tim Wesley said. "I've seen big avalanches there. It's 2, 600 meters up there. It's not typical. The snow changes a lot over that distance. So I always think about Creek Tunnel a little too much. There's a saying in Washington that if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. And it's true. 3 0-yea r-old Chris Rudolf, a 3 0-yea r-old marketing manager of Stevens Pass, knew his favorite route. Tunnel Creek was his favorite detour. At the beginning of the weekend, he talked to his selected leading guests and his close friends about traveling to Tunnel Creek.

"It was a very, very deep, heavy, strong, powerful group of pro skiers and ski industry people," said photographer and former Powder editor Keith Carlsen.

Rudolph put the strings together. Some of the guests, like Saugstad, were at Stevens Pass for a promotional event for advanced women skiers, run by ski equipment manufacturer Salomon. Rudolph ran with the group all day Saturday. He organized and hosted a dinner for the ladies that night in Leavenworth, a no-nonsense country town dressed like a Bavarian village, 35 miles away.

Dust had come to promote Stevens Pass for a feature on night skiing. When magazine editor John Stifter arrived in Leavenworth by train two days earlier, Rudolph's car was waiting for him. Inside were the car keys, a tilt-cab key and two blue Pabst ribbons in the cup holders.

At the bar, Rudolph told a few people he was going to Creek Tunnel on Sunday. The invitation came by whisper and text, by way of friendship and casual acquaintance.

We met at the fire pit on the stone deck of Granite Peaks Lodge at 11 a. m. Rudolph figured the Sunday morning staff meeting would be over by then.
