Simatai Great Wall

The partially restored Simatai Great Wall retains much of its original appearance, and was once known for its steep and dangerous climbs. Nevertheless, Simatai is famous for its stunning views and steep climbs, making it a great place for adventure lovers.

The Great Wall at Simatai is located 120km northeast of Beijing, about 2 hours from central Beijing. Due to the long driving time, it is best to plan a full day to visit the Simatai Great Wall.

Highlights and Travel Tips

The Simatai section of the Great Wall is 3. 5 miles long and is divided into east and west sections by a small reservoir. The western section connects with the Jinshanling Great Wall, has a gentler slope, and preserves 20 sentinels. The eastern section is much steeper and requires a higher level of physical fitness to climb. Currently, only the eastern section from building 2 to building 7 is officially open.

All visitors must first arrive at the parking lot at Jiubingshui Town. There is a free bus at the parking lot that can take you directly to the entrance of the Great Wall at 10am, 12pm and 2pm. The last bus back to the parking lot is at 4:30pm. Tourists who buy tickets for Jiubing Water Town can walk from the Great Wall to Haicheng in about 30 minutes.

Gubei Water Town is a tourist replica of Hangzhou's Wuzhen Water Town in 2014, with boutique hotels and hot spring baths. It is certainly beautiful, but it doesn't feel historical. If you plan to explore Gubei Water Town, you can buy a combined ticket for the Great Wall and the water town at the counter. If you want to skip Gubei Water Town and only visit Simatai Great Wall, you need to book your tickets online at least one day before your visit. Otherwise, you may not be able to get tickets at the counter. Because there is a limited number of people who can visit the Matai Great Wall in a day, and when it is windy or raining, the number of people is even smaller.

The Shimadai Castle is quite steep depending on the location, and most places have no side walls or handrails, so it is not suitable for small children, those with disorders on the feet, and those who have a phylasia. Also, wear a durable shoe (preferably boots that support your ankle) and do not forget to wear appropriate clothes. Water is not sold along the wall, so don't forget to bring it.

Note that there is no toilet along the wall. The closest toilet is near the cable car station and the chec k-in entrance. A steep slope is slippery and dangerous, so you should avoid visiting the Shig a-cho Castle after it is snowing or is raining. In the case of heavy rains and strong winds, cable cars and the Great Wall itself may be closed.
