The streets form perfect right angles, like a topographical chessboard. The layout makes the city accessible even to those (like me) who are unfamiliar with the geography.

Their Airbnb is on the edge of the historic old town, with its green, seafoam façade, pure white trim and cerulean blue doors. A light breeze blows away the midday heat, and I hear a woman singing scales from above. Her undulating sounds filter through the rooftop window like released butterflies.

For three weeks before Ella and I arrived, Amy and John were in Melida, Mexico. As a result, we were able to narrow down stores and boutiques worth visiting in a limited time.

The Best of Mérida, Mexico: Cocktails and Tacos
