The Black Wall (or Black Wall) [1] is a firewall developed by Netwatch. It sits inside the Net and is tasked with preventing rogue AIS from infiltrating other cyberspaces and wreaking havoc.
Firewalls often split legacy network systems in two, leading to stories of ghost data.

History
2040S []
Since the Data Crash caused by Rache Bartmos, humanity has been forced to sacrifice access to irreplaceable resources and knowledge in order to protect the network. Netwatch has tried to regain control over the rogue AI, but to no avail. As an alternative, Netwatch - with the help of Ghost - secretly began developing a project in 2044 called "Blackwall" that would keep the Net under control while permanently sealing off the old access nodes to the Net. Blackwall's mission was to secure the area of cyberspace for human use while containing the threat of dangerous rogue AIs that were unleashed on the Net decades ago. [1] [2] [3]
2077 []
By 2077, Blackwall is still active, as rogue AIS, if left unchecked, could cause the end of the world. However, several Netrunner teams are pursuing ways to destroy the firewall, thinking that free AIS could help them conquer the virtual world. To ensure this never happens, Netwatch is working overtime to stop others from destroying the firewall.
Various sources reveal that Blackwall is not a firewall, but a powerful AI disguised as ice whose job it is to keep unauthorized intruders out of the safety net when detected by the AIS. Blackwall is also referred to as a band-aid solution, as he is an AI and therefore potentially ruthless. The Voodoo Boys believe this outcome is inevitable and are willing to do whatever it takes to eliminate Blackwall and gain favor with the rogue AIS for when they return.[4]
Other elite groups have also shown interest in the Blackwall, most notably American multinational corporation Militech, which has reinvigorated the long-defunct Sinoger Project, an earlier attempt to use adaptive neural networks to capture AI villains, and is looking to use the Blackwall for its own purposes, particularly against Arasaka. The Federal Government of the New United States has also shown a disproportionate interest in exploiting the Blackwall through specialized networkers such as Son Somi.
Alto Cunningham reveals that the best way to survive beyond the Blackwall is to assume that human forms are not transformed into pure data by animal behavior. [5]
Depending on the choices made at the end of Cyberpunk 2077, either V or Johnny will agree to follow Alto beyond the Blackwall, where they can merge with her like other Mikoshi constructs. [5]

When efforts to rebuild the network after the Rache Bartmoss attack proved futile and wild post-Krash AIs began to threaten companies (often the very companies that created them), NetWatch decided to cut its losses. A few dozen of the organization's best networkers built what became known as the Blackwall: a protective barrier that would protect the fragmented and unstable (but still usable) NetWatch from the ruthless AIs roaming the ruins of cyberspace. The Blackwall came out of nowhere, without warning, meaning that netizens left on the other side had no way to escape safely or survive in cyberspace indefinitely. As a result, NetWatch managed to kill two birds with one stone by neutralizing the AI threat and eliminating the pesky hackers. The cost of the Blackwall meant giving up important technological advances that came with self-aware AI. But NetWatch responded by creating new tools that gave them even more access to the Internet. For years, corporate propaganda has glorified Netwatch agents as defenders of the people and the last line of defense for humanity through the Black Wall. But mysterious cyberattacks (which agents are not always able to hide) prove that the "wall" is not as strong as we think it is. [6]
